Spring greens

There is something every-so-inspiring about the first lettuce of spring. All those frilly green rosettes in the garden that just demand to be eaten... Maybe because they just don't taste like the stuff in the stores. Ditto radishes. I don't much like commercial radishes, but those who hate radishes should try a sweet, crunchy, delicate radish fresh from the garden. Not the same experience at all.

Yes, I had a salad today, with lettuce and mustard greens and a radish and lemon balm and borage blossoms, drizzled lightly with fresh varietal olive oil and pear vinegar. Food of the faeries. No store-bought salad will ever match it...
