Katrina impacts on food

I've already mentioned Crystal Hot Sauce. (sniff)
Chiquita Banana lost its processing facility in Gulfport.
The Gulf shrimp and oyster industries have taken a severe hit. The affected areas provide 10% of the shrimp for the U.S. market and 40% of the oysters.
A number of sugar refineries were hit.

And...wait for it...1/4 of the total COFFEE supply for the U.S. was in warehouses in New Orleans when Katrina hit. So in addition to paying more at the gas pumps, look for a huge markup for your cuppa joe, coming soon to a Starbucks near you. Speculators are already starting to drive the price up, and you may see coffee double in price by the end of the year.
