Armistice Day

"When will they ever learn?" asks an old Peter, Paul, and Mary song. Veteran's Day sprung of Armistice Day, when finally, at the 11th hour of the 11th day, the great guns fell silent. A war almost forgotten, but of which I heard stories when I was growing up. Charging machine guns with bayonets. Mustard gas. Trench warfare. Forgotten battles in forgotten places, by forgotten people (including Vietnamese soldiers in Europe). Andrew and I have talked a lot about WWI, the past couple days. The "War to End All Wars," supposedly so horrible that no one would ever be so foolish as to do this sort of thing again. How soon it was forgotten. And that's why we have Veteran's Day, now, instead.
